The day I photographed an assisted living facility in Atlanta, Ga. will always be remembered fondly. The residents, aware that they would be the stars of the day, were thrilled to add a little extra to their presence on camera. Having previously discussed the assignment with the art director, I was prepared to highlight the friendly, caring atmosphere and emphasize the exclusive furnishings and setting of the residence.

When the creative director for a business to business ad agency that had an aviation company as their client saw an image I did of exhaust fans on an offshore oil drilling platform he contacted me. He said, "If you could make exhaust fans look like that, I can imagine what you could do with a corporate jet." Off we went to an airport in Albuquerque, NM and photographed beautiful private aircraft, working around the maintenance schedule of the aviation company's employees so as not to interfere with aircraft delivery deadlines. When I saw that they had just waxed the floor of a hanger they agreed to move a jet in position to allow me to do a beauty shot with a wonderful reflection - it wound up being the CEO's choice for the cover of their brochure.

The shuffleboard and baby crib photographs were part of a series on the importance of vitamins for seniors and babies - the photographs showing the results of taking vitamins in a humorous way. The shuffleboard court was shot outside on a sunny day where I used the burnt path of the unseen disc and broken disc to clearly communicate the ad's message. The escaped baby photo was shot in the studio. I used soft, gentle lighting which contrasted with the unexpected event depicted in the ad. I had the model maker I work with create the bent rails on the crib and burnt path on the shuffleboard court ahead of time and then control the real flame as the wind cooperated beautifully. My model maker is the consumate problem solver and an all around good guy, which makes for smoothly orchestrated photo shoots.

I love architecture and that's why I have a degree in it. It's shapes and textures illuminated by our purest light source, the sun, whether it's in a clear sky with hard shadows or hazy day with soft shadows makes for a satisfying photographic experience for me. This is especially true when the art director gives me total creative freedom and the subject is the exciting architecture of Chicago where I had the opportunity to push creativity. Part of this creative process is bouncing ideas off the art director and that collaboration makes for an even more successful shoot. Because our access to rooftops and other restricted areas had been prearranged, it allowed us to move rapidly from site to site. During the shoot beautiful cumulus clouds moving overhead enabled me to frame the buildings with sharply defined billowing clouds. I also shot variations using long shutter speeds to create elongated cloud forms streaking smoothly across the sky which then contrasted effectively with the hard lined edges of the buildings.

In my artist’s statement, I refer to my discovery of visual gifts - those precious instances of unrevealed beauty and intrigue we encounter every day only if we take the time to look at things with an uncluttered, undistracted and open mind. Many of these special discoveries reside in the realm of one of earth’s elements - water. In my travels I am unconsciously drawn to it and its amazing myriad manifestations - pounding surf on a beach and its interaction with unyielding rock, seemingly microscopic dewdrops on a delicate cobweb at dawn, dense fog permeating the night making the atmosphere visible, or my son hoping to find an exciting catch in his dripping fishing net. Water has mesmerized us since the dawn of man and I am living proof.
